KUALA LUMPUR: An attack on a young woman by a security guard at a condominium where she is staying has raised questions on the integrity of personnel hired to protect the residents.
The woman was attacked by the guard as she was exiting a lift last month.
Relating her ordeal during a press conference at MCA Public Services and Complaints Department chairman Datuk Seri Michael Chong’s office yesterday, the cosmetic course student said the guard had followed her into the lift from the first floor.
“I became suspicious when he did not press any buttons but instead stood behind me,” she said.
Feeling uneasy, she moved to stand next to the man who was wearing a security guard vest so she could see what he was doing as the lift was ascending to level six, where she lives with her aunts.
“When the door opened, the man suddenly grabbed me from behind and put his hand over my mouth while trying to drag me back inside,” she said.
Knowing that her aunt would be able to see and hear her from the kitchen window, the victim screamed loudly and put up a fight to escape her attacker.
The attacker fled through the staircase after her aunt, who had heard her screams while cooking and saw the attack, rushed out to help.
They reported the incident to the condominium management office only to be told that they did not have details of the guard as he had only been working there a week prior to the attack after being recommended by one of the residents.
They also lodged a report at the Pandan Indah police station the same day.
The victim, who is traumatised by the attack, said she is now having difficulty sleeping at night and is always scared whenever she is alone.
Chong said the management of the condominium might have not followed the standard operating procedure (SOP) in hiring security guards.
“It is not about whether the guard is a local or a foreigner. What is important is that the management should have fulfilled the SOP to ensure the safety of the residents at the condominium,” he said.
“I am grateful that she did not sustain any serious injuries but we will look into this matter seriously so it will not recur elsewhere,” he said.
Ampang Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Khairuldin Saad confirmed receiving the report and said police had identified the security guard and the case was now being investigated under Section 354 of the Penal Code for molest.CERITA SELANJUTNYA
